Teaching and Research Assistantships

Teaching and Research Assistantships (TAs and RAs) are typically available during the second year of study, and only to currently registered MIT graduate students. Students in a dual degree program outside of MIT are not permitted to purse TAships or RAships when not registered at MIT as their primary residence. MBA candidates are not permitted to pursue TAships or RAships in the first semester of study. These positions are awarded on an informal basis by the faculty, as students begin to match their interests and talents with those of particular faculty members. Many positions are advertised on MySloan in the Educational Services area under TA Opportunities. During their first year at MIT Sloan, students seeking such a position are also encouraged to contact faculty with whom they share a field of interest. The various research centers associated with MIT Sloan are another possible source of research assistantships (RAs).

In order to be eligible for a TA or RA position, a student must have a current cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher, as shown on WebSIS. Students who have violated standards of academic or professional conduct are not eligible. Students are not allowed to receive academic credit for a course if they are also a TA for that course.

Once an agreement for funding has been reached between student and faculty member, an appointment form must be processed by the academic area coordinator before the start of the appointment. First time TAs at MIT Sloan are also required to complete the trainings described on the MIT Sloan TAs site in preparation for their role.

Sloan Educational Services (SES) provides additional information about Teaching Assistantships on their MySloan website.
